Grow Light Technology Comparisons
No bias, just facts. We compare HPS against LED, CMH, and other technologies so you can make the right choice for your specific situation.
| Factor | HPS | LED | CMH/LEC |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront Cost (600W equiv.) | $150-300 | $400-1000+ | $300-500 |
| Electricity Cost/Month | $65-80 | $30-40 | $45-55 |
| Heat Output | High | Low | Medium-High |
| Spectrum | Red-dominant | Customizable | Full spectrum |
| Canopy Penetration | Excellent | Good | Excellent |
| Bulb Replacement | 12-18 months | 5+ years | 12-18 months |
| Track Record | 30+ years | 10+ years | 15+ years |
The most common question in indoor growing. We break down initial costs, running costs, performance, and ROI timelines with real numbers.

CMH (Ceramic Metal Halide) offers a middle ground with better spectrum but similar heat to HPS. Learn when CMH makes sense and when to stick with HPS.

Which Technology for Your Situation?
- - You have a tight initial budget
- - You grow in a cold environment (heat is beneficial)
- - You have experience with HPS techniques
- - You prioritize proven, consistent results
- - You need maximum canopy penetration
- - Electricity costs are high in your area
- - Heat management is difficult
- - You want spectrum control
- - You plan to grow for 3+ years
- - You're starting fresh without HPS experience
- - You want better spectrum than HPS
- - You're okay with heat management
- - Quality is your top priority
- - You want to supplement HPS with UV
- - You grow plants that need full spectrum
The Hybrid Approach: Best of Both Worlds
Many experienced growers use HPS in winter (when heat is beneficial) and switch to LED in summer (to reduce cooling needs). This hybrid approach maximizes the benefits of both technologies while minimizing their drawbacks.
Some growers also use HPS for flowering (where its red-dominant spectrum excels) and LED or MH for vegetative growth.
