Vertical HPS Setup: Maximizing Yield in Limited Floor Space

Vertical bare bulb HPS setup with plants arranged in a circle
After years of growing with traditional horizontal lighting, I decided to experiment with a vertical bare bulb setup using two 600W HPS lights. The results have been remarkable, with significantly improved yields per square foot of floor space.
Setup Details:
- 2x 600W Lumatek Digital Ballasts
- Hortilux Super HPS Bulbs
- Vertical hanging configuration (no reflector)
- Plants arranged in a circle around lights
- 800 CFM extraction fan with carbon filter
- Oscillating fans for air movement
Heat Management Solution:
The key to making this work was proper air extraction. I installed an 800 CFM fan at the top of my grow space, creating a constant upward airflow that pulls heat away from the plants. I also run my lights during nighttime hours when ambient temperatures are lower.
Results:
This setup allowed me to achieve approximately 1.5g per watt, a significant improvement over my previous horizontal lighting configuration. The vertical arrangement ensures all plants receive direct light, eliminating the shadowing issues I experienced before. While heat management requires attention, the results make it worthwhile.
